What is a Freight Elevator?
A freight elevator is an elevator within a building that can lift heavy items such as furniture or vehicles. Freight elevators are found in almost every high-rise building as well as in department stores, factories, hotels, or other settings where the movement of heavy goods is frequent.
A freight elevator is a large elevator designed to move goods from different floors in a building. Because of this, they are often larger than ordinary commercial lifts designed for passengers. Freight lifts typically weigh between 2,300 and 4,500 kg, and usually have a solid interior to help prevent damage during loading and unloading.
As the name implies, freight elevators are intended only for transporting large and heavy goods, not passengers. While you may often think of an elevator as something that transports people between different floors of a building, this is not the only purpose of an elevator. There are different types of lifts, designed to do different things. One of the most common types of elevators is the freight elevator. These lifts are designed to transport goods, not people. Despite the fact that people are not supposed to travel in freight elevators, accidents can still happen, and injuries can occur.
Classes in the Goods Elevator
Class A: General Freight Loading
Goods lifts of this class have a distributed load, the weight of each section is not more than 1/4 of the lift capacity and the load is handled inside and outside the car platform manually or by hand truck.
Class B: Motor Vehicle Loading
Goods lifts of this class are used solely for transporting trucks or passenger cars up to the rated capacity of the lift.
Class C1: Industrial Truck Loading
Cars can be used to load and unload goods in elevators with this class. The combined weight of the vehicle and the load cannot exceed the rated capacity and can be rolled onto the platform as a unit.
Class C2: Industrial Truck Loading
In this class, during loading and unloading, the maximum load on the platform may be up to 150% of the rated capacity. This allows the user to use a forklift to load cars with loads that weigh up to the rated capacity.
Class C3: Another Form of Industrial Truck Loading
During the loading and unloading process, the rated capacity should not be exceeded.
Advantages of Freight Elevator
- Low failure rate: advanced hydraulic system and good control method, the failure rate of elevator operation can be lowered.
- Low power consumption: When the hydraulic lift descends, it is driven by the pressure generated by its own weight, which greatly saves energy.
